Tennis in Sun and Shadow

Photos by Jean Paul Saint Fleur & Phalonne Pierre Louis

Like many, Haiti has been on our minds these past few weeks.  There is a rich tennis culture in the Caribbean and Haiti is no exception. For our new issue—guest edited by Naomi Osaka—we could think of no better partner in documenting tennis culture in the (half) island nation of Haiti  than FotoKonbit, a Port-au-Prince-based nonprofit organization with a mission to support Haitian photographers in the service of changing the preexisting narratives of Haiti and help recontextualize the Caribbean nation. It is their mission to create a platform from which Haitian pho- tographers can share their own narratives and vision with the world.

Phalonne Pierre Louis documented tennis at the tennis and golf club located in Port-au-Prince’s gated and privately guarded suburb of Pétion-Vile, while Jean Paul Saint Fleur shot at four sites in Jacmel, including at the IOA Center, an elementary school founded by Naomi’s parents in 2001. Presented here are some outtakes from the feature in Racquet No. 17.
